Why is this vegan blog called “Ugly Vegan Kitchen”?

One of my favorite childhood memories was going to my Slavic grandmother’s house to enjoy a hearty, home-cooked meal.  Many years later, I scoured the internet looking for veganized Slavic recipes, but I came up empty-handed. It could have been that there weren’t a lot Slavic vegan bloggers at the time, or it could have been something else. While Slavic food isn’t always photogenic, it is delicious and comforting.

Ugly Vegan Kitchen focuses on vegan “ugly food” or comfort food. You’ll find vegan soups, stews, casseroles, salads, veggie burgers, pasta dishes, hearty whole grain meals, slow cooker recipes, and more.

Most of the recipes are fairly easy to execute, but some take a bit of time. Some use very few ingredients, and some are more elaborate. Some are budget-friendly, and some use raw ca$hew$. At Ugly Vegan Kitchen, some of the recipes are camera-ready, but not all. It’s all about the flavor, anyway.

Who is Ugly Vegan Kitchen?

My name is Jana. In the 1980’s, my family went vegetarian. In the 1990’s, I went vegan. For me, being vegan is an extension of my compassion. I have always loved to cook and make meals from scratch. And I started this vegan blog to share recipes with you.

It’s all in good taste!
