Why is this blog called “Ugly Vegan Kitchen”?

One of my favorite childhood memories was going to my Slavic grandmother’s house to enjoy a hearty, home-cooked meal. Many years later, I scoured the internet looking for veganized Slavic recipes, but I came up empty-handed. It could have been that there weren’t a lot Slavic vegan bloggers at the time, or it could have been something else. While Slavic food isn’t always photogenic, it is delicious and comforting. And so, I created Ugly Vegan Kitchen (UVK), a blog with recipes.

Ugly Vegan Kitchen focuses on vegan “ugly food” or comfort food, and takes inspiration from many cuisines, including American, Slavic, Mediterranean and more. You’ll find recipes for vegan soups, stews, casseroles, salads, veggie burgers, sandwiches, pasta dishes, rice dishes, slow cooker dinners, and more. There’s also a good amount of gluten free vegan recipes too.

Most of this vegan blog’s recipes are fairly easy to execute, but some take a bit of time. Some use very few ingredients, and some are more elaborate. Some are budget-friendly, and some use raw ca$hew$. At UVK, some of the recipes are camera-ready, but not all. It’s all about the flavor, anyway.
Ugly Vegan Kitchen has been featured in Parade, Best of Vegan, and more.
Who is Ugly Vegan Kitchen?
My name is Jana and I am a vegan recipe developer. In the 1980’s, my family went vegetarian. In the 1990’s, I went vegan. For me, being vegan is an extension of my compassion.
I have always loved to cook and make meals from scratch. While I use a wide variety of ingredients in my vegan blog recipes, some of my favorites include fresh herbs, sauerkraut, beets, potatoes, Swiss chard, mushrooms, seitan, tempeh, tofu and beans. I positively love making soup. It’s probably my favorite thing to do.
And I started this vegan blog to share recipes with you 💚
It’s all in good taste!
Subscribe below and never miss another recipe.
